Outdoor
Activities Abound
Located
in the rolling valley beneath
Scaly
Mountain
, King Mountain
Club offers unlimited opportunities for outdoor activity.
Our swim and tennis community is adjacent to the
Nantahala
National Park
, making our home
sites among the most beautiful in the
North Carolina
mountains.
If
active recreation is your style, try hiking, biking, walking or
jogging on the many trails woven throughout the community.
If quiet reflection appeals to you, take time to enjoy
photography, star gazing or trout fishing.
The abundance of wildlife and plant life offers a rare look
into the wonders of nature.
Scaly
Mountain itself is on the north side of our area and can be
found by following our roads in that direction. A short gravel road
leads east then turns sharply north and then east on what was an old
carriage road to Highlands. Continue on and up for 1/8 of a mile
until you go beside a large flat rock. Look right for a footpath
that takes you to a very scenic view over Blue Valley. Continuing up
the trail north and turning left or up the gap for a longer time
takes you to the top of Scaly Mountain.
Glen Falls is
more of a tourist attraction but is still fun. It is on the road,
N.C. 106, to Highlands. Just before the town there is a large sign
to the right pointing the way. Going down the fairly steep path one
can view three falls. The rest can be found by use of the
Guide to Day Hikes by the Highland Hiker, an outing store. Highland
Hiker is at 100 E. Main Street in Highlands. Listing other
hikes that we enjoy are as follows:
Rabun Bald
Area, the 2nd highest mountain in Georgia has quite a view.
There is an old stone fire tower at the top. At the bottom of the
mountain there is a good parking lot.
Chimney Top
Mountain has a terrific view but is steep near the top.
The Giant
Popular Tree is an auto trip more than a hike but fun for
guests. Iron
Bridge at Bullpen listed as the Chattooga Trail... in our
guide is on the Chattooga River and offers many rocks in the river
that is fun, especially for children, to climb. One can get wet,
cool down, and the trail continues up river. The auto route there is
fun with many loops. It has a gravel road at the end. It is good for
picnics.
Whiteside
Mountain offers quite a view includes some steep climbing. Other
favorite are Holcombe and Emory Falls, Chinquapin Mountain, and
Cliffside Lake and Vista Trail. This is only a small sample
of hikes and other King Mountain members have their favorites. Some
hikes take more energy than others and this should be part of any
planning.
The Bartram
Trail cuts though our property but extends many miles on either
side. Information can be found at Route 3 Box 406, Sylva, NC 28779.
This could involve longer hikes than one day.
